A North Carolina teen had to strike a plea deal to avoid potentially going to jail and being registered for the rest of his life as a sex offender after being caught at school with two naked pictures of himself and one of his girlfriend, on his private cell phone. The minor, Cormega Copening, resident and local quarterback in Fayetteville, North Carolina, was himself charged as an adult under federal child pornography felony laws, for sexually exploiting himself.
To add insult to injury in this ridiculous case of judicial overreach, North Carolina is not one of the 20 states which has enacted “Romeo and Juliet” laws, to avoid prosecuting teenagers who exchange naked pictures with each other as a couple where there is no exploitation. With research suggesting that 30% of teens “sext” each other, how many of our youth possibly face entering the Prison-Industrial Complex for engaging in this harmless act of adolescence?
