As if Americans aren’t fat and lazy enough, researchers have now developed a new supplement set to “neutralize” the damaging effects of carbohydrates — even without diet or exercise.
Dr. Harry Preuss, professor of medicine at Georgetown University says, “We’re having a horrific epidemic of diabesity, which means diabetes and obesity.”
Dr. Preuss attributes the prevalence of both conditions largely to carbohydrates. Eating too many starchy carbs raises blood sugar and creates excess fat – which eventually lead to diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
The drug – because lets face it, it’s more like a drug and less like a supplement – is made from white kidney beans. It’s called “Phase 2” and has already undergone extensive trials.
Phase 2 blocks the enzyme alpha amylase, which breaks down carbohydrates. This prevents a considerable amount of starch from being absorbed by the body. The end result is lower blood sugar levels, gradual weight loss and weight maintenance after a diet.
Dr. Preuss warns that taking Phase 2 does not give you carte blanche to eat whatever you want; it’s still important to eat sensibly.
Though the idea may seem promising, rarely do quick fixes such as this actually yield lasting results. Remember: When something’s too good to be true, it probably is.
