It seems that satellite tracking technology is not as secure as the government might have us believe, as a security researcher exposes how a $1000 device, made of all off the shelf components, can easily hack satellite data transmissions from even industry leaders such as GlobalStar. GlobalStar and its throng of satellites are responsible for providing tracking services to multitudes of valuable cargo daily, such as military supplies, cash and gold stored in armored cars.
The finder, Colby Moore, a researcher at security firm Synack, wholeheartedly showed off his findings during the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas. Moore believes that not only was Global Star woefully unprepared and unaware of their technological vulnerabilities, they haven’t been taking the necessary steps to secure their services even after their security faults have come to light, either.
Could this undermine the often intrusive and overreaching mentality that considers this type of technology as a necessity to ensure the public’s overall “personal security?”
