Earlier, Miri Michaeli, Europe correspondent for Israel’s Channel 10 news, tweeted: “Chabad: Paris police order [us] to cancel most of our public [Hanukkah] candlelighting in the city, in light of the terror attack and the fear of additional attacks. Efforts [are underway] to approve a candlelighting at the foot of the Eiffel [Tower].”
Though Michaeli has since updated her claim, saying the lighting has already been given the green light (with heightened security in the area, no doubt), the fact that the French government is willing to censor a yearly, religious practice such as this one, for “security reasons,” shows just how much the terrorist attacks have affected the lives of the French.
Moreover, although the security of its citizens would undoubtedly be of paramount consideration, the fact that the government knew of the activities of the Paris terrorists even before the attacks and did nothing about it, while now trying to censor a religious candle-lighting ceremony for “security reasons,” says a lot about the government’s skewed anti-terror priorities.
